Is it worth buying a GoPro for travels when you have .

The main things you have to ask yourself are:

Will there be any danger of sea water or impact?

The iPhone 7 can handle a little bit of water… but any sea water (because of the salt content) or dropping it will ruin it. Same thing if you are sticking it to a bike handle bar you are pedaling around.

Will you hands be occupied?

A GoPro can mount to a helmet, shoulder strap (beware of thieves!) or handlebar and the Hero5 can be voice-controlled.

Are there any good places for timelapses?

The mounting ability allows you to put the GoPro in a spot (like a balcony railing) any get a nice timelapse while you sleep/eat dinner.

Will there be any scenes that require an ultra-wide angle image?

GoPro’s 172* field of view allows you some unique perspectives

You or, rather, other commenters may retaliate the above with a rant that I am a professional, and “these recommendations are good only for professionals, yet we are just amateurs/casual users and it will be fine like this, with a GoPro on a selfie stick and vertical video to watch only on smartphones”, blah-blah-blah.

No. Otherwise there wouldn’t be a torrent of tutorial articles, films and videos with recommendations like “how to make a good vacation photos and videos”. Tutorial videos are more recent thing, but I compared a lot of magazines and beginner’s guides from our era and times past… Well, some of them repeat each other word for word: composition, exposure, accurate color reproduction, non-intrusive retouching, etc., etc.

First, “professional” videos and pictures are different from “non-professional” only because they are paid for. Professional videos and photographs are not always paid. Sometimes they are not paid to be good. Moreover, not quite seldom they are lousy junk even if they are paid for, and decently. C’est la vie, like French say, although in the recent years than happens more often than in the 19th and 20th centuries, because of very easy access to imaging these days and even easier in the future.

Second, not earning your keep with a camera does not entitle you to produce gigabytes and hours of trash. Home films and images become an invaluable source of historical insight decades later. So, if you keep your images and videos properly exposed and composed, steady, level and of reasonable color, some historians many years later (or, heaven forbid, news crews in the nearest future) will be really thankful. Your grandchildren and other descendants will be even more grateful.

So, please don’t neglect an advice, even if the outcome that follows it may seem boring to you. It is not. You can always spoil an image, but not always can see it again as it was meant to be.
